My Secret to Making 2015 Our Most Profitable Year Yet

Oh, tax season! Some of you are relaxing after filing your taxes early as others scramble to assemble their last minute receipts and records before April 15th rolls around. Regardless of whether your return is filed or in limbo, we all can agree that we’ll be thrilled when it’s over, right? As you look over what your business brought in last year, how are you feeling about those numbers? Were your expenses higher than you anticipated, or are you pleased you were able to put aside so much this past year?

As I was going through our books with Armon, I noticed something that truly left my jaw on the floor — we’d far surpassed our goals for 2015 and made last year our most profitable by leaps and bounds. Last year, we brought in six figures. Cue the disbelief and tears forming in my eyes!

Can I be honest with you, friend? I didn’t do anything extraordinary last year. I didn’t launch 80 mini courses or host multiple retreats. I didn’t drastically increase my prices or take on more clients. In fact, I took on fewer clients in 2015 than I ever have. But I did do something so seemingly unimportant that you’d miss it if you weren’t looking closely. I did one tiny, insignificant thing that yielded big results — I kept my head down and did the work.

For as tempting as it was, I did my best not to look to my right or to my left to see what my peers were doing. I didn’t try to compete with mega industry conferences as I hosted our first Illume Retreat. I didn’t attempt to offer to same branding experience my colleagues were providing. I listed to that small voice within that guides me toward my most intentional, heartfelt work. And that simple process lead to big results.

More than the big numbers that we can celebrate, 2015 was a year of building even deeper relationships with my clients. It was a year of consistently working with dream clients, the type that are more than a joy to work with, they’re a privilege. It was a year of firsts and failed attempts and loss and getting back up to try all over again. And truthfully, I believe we were able to make 2015 such a success because we stayed the course and continued to build a brand that people resonated with. It wasn’t through extravagant or over-the-top strategies, or through grand gestures that we connected on a personal level with a few thoughtful, passionate individuals who would eventually join our little corner of the internet. Instead, it was through small, deliberate and seemingly insignificant decisions that we continued to build our little tribe and continue offering services and experiences that a handful of people believed in. And that is truly an honor, friend.
